Welcome to this week’s capsules. Last week, we began looking at Failure, the fifth factor needed to build the confidence to face your dream. Today, we will be using the story of James Dyson as our case study.
James Dyson, is the inventor Of DC Vacuum Cleaners, one of the best vacuum cleaners in the world. Dyson’s first invention ever were ball barrows (as against the regular wheel barrows that were common at the time) He registered Kirk-Dyson, his company name and made great sales as the product was very successful for the first five years. However, after five years, the shareholders of the company kicked him off the board of directors and since he registered the patent right of the product in the company name, James left without his designs. In other words, he was back to square one, out of business, out of job and most importantly, out of cash! He had technically ‘’failed’’
For the next five years, he struggled to survive, failing many times along the way but he never gave up because his passion was strong enough During this period, he designed 5,127 prototypes of vacuum cleaners and finally the world’s first bag less vacuum cleaner was born. Now, take note of the fact that he made five thousand one hundred and twenty seven unsuccessful prototypes before he got it right. In other words, failed five thousand one hundred and twenty seven times before he came up with the world’s first bag less vacuum cleaner which was his big break!
My question to you who is reading this piece is this? How many times are you willing to fail before you succeed? How long can you persevere with failure before your success comes? You really need to answer this question for yourself because if you are not ready to fail at all along your journey to success, when it finally comes, your self-confidence would be badly affected if not totally debased! James Dyson probably was using his upkeep funds, if any, to buy materials for more and more experiments (failures) during this very trying period of Survival!
Today, DC vacuum cleaners are sold in over forty five countries of the world. As at 2015, his net worth was 4.9 billion US Dollars
Funny enough, after his big invention, he still had more battles yet to conquer in the business world before his company gained roots. He wrestled in business for fifteen painful years but the reward of his delay was to be exponential.
Punch line, each failure brings you closer to your success.
