Welcome to this week’s capsules . Apologies I couldn’t bring you your weekly capsules , yesterday. I had an extremely busy day. We have been looking at the first category of people; those yet to find their talents. Today, we will be looking at a special set under this category; the multi-talented folks. talents.
Like I said in one of our previous capsules, everyone is born with a measure of greatness in him/her, though some are born with greater measures than others. Some people are naturally multi-talented. They can’t help being so. I fall into this category so I can confidently tell you that it’s a pretty tough place to be.
Growing up as a young girl, I discovered I was gifted with a lot of things. I could dance, act, write, drum and so on. When I grew up, it got worse as I discovered more gifts. I directed stage plays, anchored events, host programs on Television, engage in public speaking sessions, facilitate corporate trainings, engage in gift and surprise services, amongst others.
At some point, I got really frustrated because I seemed like a jack of all trades! When people asked what I did for a living, I couldn’t define it in one clear sentence. Thank God for someone close who demystified it all. He said ‘If you are multi-talented, start with the gift that you carry out with the greatest ease’. When you build upon it and become established at it, it would create a platform for your other talents to find expression
An old (I think Chinese) adage says that ‘a man who is multi-talented, would have his family starve. The reason is because multi-talented people find it difficult to focus.
I see multiple-talents as a two faced coin, a blessing and a curse. The bearer defines the face he/she is going to experience. Most multi-talented people end up wasting much time trying out several activities before settling for one and as such, they are most times perceived as confused.
Hear this, As a multi gifted person, the word is FOCUS! You need to focus on one gift and drive it to fame and fortune. Don’t worry about the others. It will make room for others when it is stable. Let me explain how I got my first event anchoring contract. I was facilitating at training for bank tellers and front desk officers. I just finished a session on goal setting when one of my ex colleagues walked up to me and said ‘’Uju, I want you to be the emcee at my wedding, coming up in a few weeks’ time’’. I said wow! I have never done that before. And he said, ‘’ I could see it in you while you were training and I know you will do a great job’’.
I took up the challenge, shopped for an outfit, goggled tips on anchoring an event, met with a fellow consultant who also anchors events for a few professional advice and I was good. That day came and it was a huge success . Since then, I have anchored several weddings and corporate events.
Now, here is my point. My speaking talent created a platform for my talent in anchoring (which I didn’t know existed) to spring up. When you work hard on one of your multiple talents and become an authority at it, it would attract fame, fortune, influence and a network of highly successful people etc. All of these attributes will cause your soil to be fertile enough to yield your other talents.
You can’t afford to be any and everywhere. A jack of all trades is a master of none. Nobody will give you money in exchange fòr your talent until they are sure you are a master at it and mastery only comes from a continuous work out of that talent . Mastery comes from focus.
The reason the multi-talented Folks are regarded as jokes is because while the one who has one talent will focus on it and achieve results faster, the multi-talented person will be all over the place dissipating his energy and earning peanuts in exchange.
Punch line; if you are multi-talented, be mono disciplined
