Welcome to this week’s capsules. This week, we will be rounding up on managing derogatory statements, which is the sixth factor required for building confidence to pursue your dream.
I like to begin this week’s capsules with the story of someone I know who pulled out of his nine to five job to pursue his dream. His parents were both professors, were both working and so they just couldn’t fathom the fact that their son had pulled out of his job and was going to face his dream. His mum took it personal after he had resigned, disturbing him regularly to get her copies of his CV so she can distribute to friends and family . Each time she asked for his CV, he would say, ‘’mummy, CEOs don’t have CVs, what they have is profiles!” For the records, I hope you know there is a difference between CVs and Profiles. A CV is what you can do and what value you can offer. A profile on the other hand is what you have done better still, your achievements thus far.
Back to my story, his mother’s disturbance for his CV continued for a while and each time she tried, she got the same response from him. Then she went a step further to make copies of his CV on his behalf and began distributing it around in church without his consent or approval. You can imagine that…. Needless to be told that his mum did not believe in his vision but six months after he set out to be on his own, he did break even and the rest is history, today he is an industry leader and a successful entrepreneur.
I always say to people, forget about what people say or do to you in the pursuit of your vision, the end will always justify the means. In fact, when those who do not understand your vision pass these derogatory comments at you, channel the anger at your vision, let it drive you to work even harder because your success is the only thing that would silence them. I love the way DR. Farah Grey puts it. He says ‘’Success is the best form of revenge’’. To all those who think you are on the wrong path in finding and living your purpose, you owe them your success. That is the only thing that will cause them to believe in you.
I will end this week’s capsules with this point. As long as you are alive, remember people must talk about you. Remember the story of the farmer who was trekking with his son alongside his donkey? The first passerby said ‘’What a foolish man. Trekking with his son besides alongside a donkey that could carry them both as well as their luggage’’. The man said to himself, that’s true. Next, he got on the donkey with his son. Next, a female passerby said ‘’what a poor donkey! This heartless man wants to kill it with such weight’’. The farmer said ‘’that’s also true’’. So he got off the donkey and began trekking again. This time, he left his son and their luggage on the donkey. Then a third passerby by stopped and said. ‘’What a disrespectful son! He is riding happily while his father treks!’’ The farmer said, ‘’Sooo true!’’ So he dropped his son from the donkey to trek while he got on the donkey’s back. Then the forth passerby stopped and said ‘’Oh! Such a heartless father. See him riding on the back of a donkey while his little son treks besides him’’. The man got fed up and dropped his little son from the donkey as they continued their journey, paying no more attention to side talks.
Punch line, as long as you are alive, people must talk about you, so get on your destiny journey!
